As HADASA continued to grow and people began to recognize the essence of the brand and its DNA, I wanted to translate these ideas into the language of the collection. I introduced structured, masculine silhouettes contrasted with distinctly feminine elements, combining elegance with strength through tailored suits, trousers, jackets, and skirts. Asymmetry became another key element, reflecting the imbalance and instability present in the world around us.
Throughout history, art and creativity have been a source of light for me during times of darkness. Tamara de Lempicka, in particular, continues to inspire me. Her distinctive interpretation of Art Deco through what is often described as “soft Cubism” feels clean, precise, and elegant—qualities I wanted to capture in the collection.
I wanted the color palette to convey a sense of hope. Emerald green introduces energy, optimism, and renewal, while softer shades of pastel pink and complementary tonal variations create a sense of calm, reflection, and emotional distance.
Ultimately, this collection is a reflection of both the world around me and the world within me—a response to instability, a celebration of complexity, and a reminder that our differences can be a source of strength rather than division.
DNA
Spring Summer '18 Collection
During the time I was designing this collection, the world around me was changing dramatically. I struggled to find the right mood and visual language for the collection. I was constantly traveling—from city to city, from country to country—and I could not escape the feeling of being defeated by everything happening in the world. The amount of information coming at me simultaneously from all these different places was overwhelming: Chemical attacks in Syria, shootings in Chicago, immigration bans, corruption, violence in Guatemala—the list goes on.
In a world of uncertainty, I felt it was time to take a stand and embrace a broader sense of purpose—one that transcends borders. It was then that I began to look inward and explore my own DNA—a complex identity shaped by many cultures, histories, and influences. I am Guatemalan. I am Panamanian. I am American. My father is half Black, of Colombian descent, and half Chinese, while my mother is Guatemalan. This intersection of cultures and identities is an essential part of who I am, and ultimately, an essential part of the DNA of HADASA.
